A New Leash on Life Foster Program

About

We believe all animals deserve to have a long, happy, healthy life. Shelters can be incredibly stressful places for pets, and that stress can weaken immune systems and increase vulnerability to illness. Foster homes provide a less stressful temporary housing option that can often speed recovery, minimize behavioral deterioration and increase chances of adoption. Because of our limited space, resources, and personnel, we are unable to care for as many sick, injured, and very young but otherwise adoptable animals we would like to. Foster care will allow some of the young ones to grow and the sick and injured to heal. In addition, utilizing foster homes for any eligible animals exponentially increases our lifesaving capacity, and reduces euthanasia in the shelters we pull from. Our foster care program brings caring individuals and needy animals together, providing care in a home setting until they are adopted. And our goal is for this process to be as efficient and swift as possible so the pets bond with their forever families and not with us. Remember:

FOSTER HOMES ARE THE HEART OF OUR PROGRAM!

Most, but not all of our animals are eligible for foster care. Lifesaving Center staff will determine if an animal is eligible to be moved to an approved foster home based on several factors including illness, behavior, age, etc. We always try to match animals with foster homes who can provide for their individual needs such as exercise for young, active dogs, lots of people time for dogs with separation anxiety, no other pets for dogs or cats who are selective about who they live with, calm homes for senior cats and dogs, etc. In general, to retain foster families we simply try our best to ensure that they have a good experience, so they continue to foster! To increase foster home retention, our entire Foster Program team will be transparent with all information about our pets and program, prompt in responding to foster needs/questions, ask for feedback so we can continually improve, and show our appreciation to them regularly! And lastly, we want this to be a fun and rewarding experience for ALL who choose to try! What better way is there to make the world a better place than to offer your home temporarily to a homeless pet in need?
